Why there can be no absolute moral system

I have a strong sense of what is right, but I don’t believe that what is right for me is right for everyone. My moral system is unique to my goals, beliefs, and life path. I don’t find the idea of a objective moral system very empowering or useful. I suggest that everyone find their own moral system and guide their lives to that. What is needed is not a blind following of any moral system, but what is needed is the creation of ones own moral system, based on ones own investigation.

It is far more effective for people to come up with their own guiding beliefs, not only will you believe them more but you will understand them and they will be a helpful addition to your life. If you take the time to investigate your beliefs and moral systems you will come to realize some very deep truths, probably even some truths that one could argue are absolute. But try as you may to communicate absolute truths you never can, for as the Tao so wonderfully says “The absolute that can be written is no the absolute.” One one experiences absolute truth it can not be explained to another, another must experience them himself. Absolute truths can not be transferred from one person to another in their completeness, gain one must feel them for himself. Someone can only point the way to that experience.

Can we always be honest with ourselves. Moral justification based on delusion is common. I have done it many times. Thanks for posting. Hopefully I will see in the next couple weeks. Peace in and out…….

true, paul, but the cow being free and 'on the loose' is no reason not to drink milk. in my feeling, having the freedom to do anything and choosing only to do what you know to be right in each moment, you free yourself also from the cycle of negative karma. at that point, you're pretty much taking on all the effects of your and others' past karma… and purifying it. in the tibetan tradition, anyway…. and a bunch of others. just sayin'

i dont like the idea of one "investigating" to find his own moral system. The reason moral systems are passed down from generation to generation is so that we are not doomed to make the same mistakes that were made before us. Id rather live in a world where people blindly follow the laws than in a society of people questioning what is right and what is wrong. I know you have your heart in the right place. I just hope that nobody takes your words the wrong way and decides to try stealing to "investigate" if it is right for them.

"Can we always be honest with ourselves. Moral justification based on delusion is common."Well put Paul. But what is delusion anyways? We are all deluded into believing what we want to believe no matter what it is. You can say we are all deluded all the time. The question really boils down to this: How can we know truth in a subjective reality… See More?I think to answer this question we must look deeply at the notion of truth. Most people seem to believe Truth as something unchanging and absolute, i.e. not subjective. But truth in a subjective reality is always changing. So, yes we must learn that we ARE always honest with our self. Our reality is of our choosing.—"i dont like the idea of one "investigating" to find his own moral system…"Jason, when one first begins the investigation process, yes it can be a bit scary, but press on my friend, press on, "An unexamined life is not worth living."

One of my teachers defined impeccability as simply doing what you know to be right. 100% of the time. I've found it more difficult than I thought itwould be, but the closer I get to 100%, the happier i am. cheers.Ro'i Rose, LMT831-33-4-ROSE (7673)"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because hehears a different drummer. Indeed the moral system is rather subjective. Since we live in a subjective and objective reality, our moral system varies from person to person and society to society. We must not follow laws or other moral systems blindly but we must question it's purpose, it's existence. To question is to better understand the laws and moral systems and decide what is right and what is wrong. We must act upon our judgment and not by others. Since our world is full of corruption and partiality, other's judgement and opinion on morality does not fully justify a moral system, there is no such thing as a universal moral system, therefore it is not a truth but rather a loose guide to prevent a society from astray. It is ultimately our duty to look upon past and present moral systems and decide with our own personal thoughts and experieces to construct the truth of our moral system. Truth is neither subjective nor objective but with our experiences and observations we can construct our truth. It is our truth of our moral system and not other worldly truths that constructs our morality.

    Delusion or illusion?

  10. Hai Tran says:

Illusion or delusion? Body or mind? Conscious or unconscious? When it comes down to our thoughts and actions, we execute it in an instict. Believe in our instincts and have faith in our actions. Although, our judgment may be delusional or illusional it is still our goal in life to create our reality as we wanted it to be no matter what delusional or illusional influences that may alter our state of being.
